DIY Tree Stump Removal Techniques

Roberto Palmer

Although tree removal may seem like a tough project, stump removal is even more involving. Once a tree has been cut, it is obvious that the stump should also be removed. After tree removal, the remainder of the tree and its roots die and begin to decay. However, this takes a long time that you might not have, necessitating immediate removal of the tree stump. Tree stump removal is an easy DIY project that you can carry out without having to hire an arborist for the job.

Reasons for stump removal

Tree stumps take up valuable space in your yard that you may need to use for other purposes. Most people want clear yards with no obstacles and tree stumps really get in the way. It is important to have stumps removed as they can become hazardous. Some blend in with the grass and other plants and one can trip on them. Finally, tree stumps are an eyesore. They give an unpleasant look to a yard, especially when weeds and other plants start growing on them. Stump removal is important not only for a beautiful yard, but also for your safety.

Tree stump removal techniques

There are various techniques that you can apply for tree stump removal. These can be categorized as manual, mechanical and chemical removal.

Manual removal

Manual tree stump removal is applicable where the tree stump is not too big and has a shallow root system. It involves digging a trench around the perimeter of the tree stump, but not too close to it. A wider circle allows enough room for easier maneuverability. It exposes the stump's roots, allowing you to hack as many roots as possible using an axe or a saw. You should pry the roots from all sides to loosen the stump until it is free. You should not try to remove the entire stump with the roots intact as this would be time consuming and difficult.

Mechanical removal

This technique involves the use of an equipment known as a tree stump grinder. Before embarking on tree stump removal, one should possess protective gear such as eye protection gear, boots and long pants. A tree stump grinder works by grinding and chopping off sections of the stump until it is removed entirely. Tree stump grinders can be rented for a one time project. It is recommended to hire a landscaper if you are not able to use this tool for DIY removal, or where the tree stump is too large and will require a lot of work.

Chemical removal

There are certain chemical fertilizers, especially those high in nitrogen, which facilitate faster stump decay through promoting bacterial growth. The chemicals are applied to the perimeter of the tree stump using a drill bit and left to take effect for a few weeks or months. The tree stump decays with time and becomes soft, making it easy to remove with an ax.

If you decide to wait for the stump to decay naturally, you can improve its look by putting a planter on it and planting something else more appealing on top of it.
